About

The Food Bank of Northeast Georgia has adapted the Teaching Garden, located at our Athens facility, to benefit the SNAP benefits department for outreach purposes. Our garden will be responsible for producing seasonal seedlings, plants, and vegetables to provide directly to local communities and community gardens.

Volunteers will be expected to provide assistance to our horticulture expert and SNAP Outreach, Kirsten Meadows, in various tasks to benefit the garden and Outreach program. Examples of volunteer tasks include: weeding, planting, harvesting, potting plants, digging, and watering plants. As the Outreach Garden is still currently under renovations, volunteers may also assist in building basic structures such as plant tables and trellises.

Volunteers have access to cold and filtered water and will be scheduled with multiple water breaks. Volunteers will be placed appropriately in positions and work in relation to the weather. As our Garden offers rain coverage in our hoop tunnel, only extreme weather will disrupt volunteer activity; any activities affected by weather will be cancelled and volunteers will be directly contacted. We ask that volunteers planning on assisting in garden activities wear appropriate clothing for the weather and close-toed shoes for all Outreach Garden events.

First-time volunteers should always review our Volunteer Page to review any updates and Covid-19 regulations, as well as to read through our Volunteer Handbook, which covers instructions for events, dress code, programs, and much more. Requirement Details
We require all vaccinated volunteers to submit one-time proof of vaccination before attending a volunteer event with the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia. A physical Covid-19 vaccination record card, a copy, or a picture can be provided by a volunteer for verification.

For non-vaccinated volunteers, we require all volunteers to submit proof of negative test results within 48 hours of every intended volunteer event. These test results may be submitted as the original, a copy, or a picture of your test results.

At this time, our facility encourages the use of face masks but does not require volunteers to wear masks while working outside in the Outreach Garden (face masks are still required in the facility at all times). Volunteers will be socially distanced during activities in our Outreach Garden.
Parking Details
We encourage volunteers to carpool when possible as parking at our facility is limited. Volunteers may park in any available parking spot. If no parking spot is available, we encourage volunteers to ask Reception to designate additional parking. Please specify to Reception upon arrival that you are here to volunteer in the Garden.

Once parked at the facility, please proceed to the orange door and ring the doorbell to be greeted by a Volunteer Department staff member and led to the Volunteer Check-In booth to sign your attendance for the volunteer event.

Our Athens facility is located at 861 Newton Bridge Road, Athens, GA, 30607.
