Jumpstart Your Community Service: Support a Cause

I donated $20 to the Orangeburg area Sickle cell Anemia foundation. I love that this is an opportunity for us, as college students to give back to the community. Anemia is prominent in my family and while I am not directly impacted it’s like helping out my family. While I am new to Orangeburg since moving here I have felt so comfortable in a community.

Dr.Calista and Dr. Rush virtually met and advised Claflin students on the importance of making a brand and networking. Networking can help you work less you to find future jobs. It is important that the clubs and associations you are involved in relate to your future career path. Write down skills and make connections everywhere you go. She stressed the importance of having a LinkedIn page because employers could reach out and offer opportunities. A part of networking is to attend events. The biggest take away was that , “It’s about how well people know you, not what and who you know.” This was different from what I’ve heard growing up.

I registered for my fall courses. My advisor helped with picking out my courses based on my interest while making sure my major requirements are met. I transferred in the fall from Trident technical college. I set my courses to get out by noon so that I can go to work at CVS afterwards.

Women win in government with Attorney Waverly Gordon who is a general counselor for the committee on energy and commerce U.S. House of Representatives . This meeting displayed to me that although I may feel like my vote and who I vote may not seem like it makes a difference but it really does. I find it so interesting seeing how far every claflin alum has gone since graduating. Attorney Gordon graduated in 2004 and my brother who is a claflin alum would have been a freshman then. It’s interesting how she didn’t use social media or have a cellphone until her sophomore year. I can relate to attorney Gordon because I love medicine but I don’t believe it’s the career path for me currently. I appreciate her and all of the alumni for giving us there contact information and offering, even making internship positions.

I donated multiple items for the women’s health drop off. These items included shampoo, deodorant, body wash, body oil, baby wipes, a toothbrush, sanitary pads, tooth paste and bar soap. This made it easier for me to be thankful for the women in my life who have blessed me with form essentials and toiletries every year when I leave home for school.

Mrs. Reaiah Brown Johnson who is the VP at Boeing advised claflin students on ways to improve success. She started her journey at Claflin at the age of 15 after skipping 1 or 2 grades. She graduated at 19 and got a job making $50,000, unfortunately she was laid off after 2 years. After this she took another job with a significant pay cut. The things that stood out to me in this session were : she was passed over multiple times for promotions even though she was training others. I can personally relate to this. What is your vision source? I have never realized how important it is to have a vision board or picture with your aspiration in it. Pay attention to the size of your circle and use it as a criteria for letting new people in. I wish her grandfather was able to see her and her husband own the transportation company. This proved her statement that she is her ancestors wildest dreams.

Dr.DaNine Fleming is a claflin alumni who was greatly influenced from her mother and grandma who were educators but her major originally was not education. She worked three jobs while in school. Her friend encouraged her to go to a graduate fair and she met a recruiter for College of Charleston by the end of the conversation the recruiter was offering her to go to College of Charleston and not have to pay. A take away from this session is it is important to give back. Pay attention to who laid the foundation for you. She now works for MUSC as an associate chief. Woman Outstanding Marginalized Audacious Now. Put on your shoes. On Saturday her program for physician assistants for 13 students will start.

The Woman’s walk was exhilarating.I spend most of my time in my dorm room. This encouraged me to go outside and get fresh air. I will now be going on morning walks. Since I am a transfer student this encouraged me to socialize with other young ladies. We walked from the gym through campus and back.
